Trek to Matheran via Shivaji Ladder route with Trek Mates on 7th Feb’10.

Hi Mates, we at Trek mates Invite you all for a one day Trek to Matheran via Shivaji Ladder route on 7th Feb’10.

Some Information about the trek:
Place: Matheran

Some details about Matheran and Shivaji Ladder route:
Matheran is situated in the Matheran range of sahyadris at a height of 2516 feet. With more than eight to ten different routes, Matheran (2516 feet) is the ultimate destination for the trekker, naturalist and outdoor enthusiast. It is literally a forest on top of the hill (mathe means head and raan means forest). The dense forest cover, teeming bird life, long walks and flora and fauna make this an all-time favourite. The best part is that it’s pollution-free as no vehicles are allowed in the hill station.

Apart from Bhimashankar, Matheran is the only other place where the giant red squirrel is to be found. It’s also a haven for snakes, from the harmless keelbacks and pythons to the more deadly members of the clan such as cobras, kraits and vipers.

While trekking up to matheran hills after Ambewadi, you will come across a mass of boulders and rocks into which the trail disappears. This is known as Shivaji Steps or the Shivaji Ladder.

According to local legend, Shivaji rode up this route on horseback. From here, it’s 500m to the top, up a stream bed that’s dry except during the monsoon. From here Big Chowk Point is clearly visible and looks like an elephant’s head.

The itinerary for the Trek is as given below:

Hey Mates, we at Trek Mates have organised a Trek to Dhak Bahiri Caves on 7th feb '10. starting on saturday. And we invite you all for this event to experience the adventure and thrill.

Some information about the Trek:

Time to reach the top: About 3 hrs from the base

Trek to Bahiri caves is famous for its rock climbing section and is considered one of the toughest trek of Maharashtra just because of this rock patch.
But we will try to make it as easy as possible, with appropriate use of ropes, securing safety of each and every participant over the patch.

The plans for the trek will be as follows :
Though it’s a one day trek, the scorching sun in this dry season heats the rocks and makes it difficult to climb after 11 am itself. So to avoid getting burnt by heated rocks we have decided to hike the cave early in the morning and for the same reason we need to reach the base one night prior to the trek.

We will be starting from Mumbai on Saturday afternoon, Our Mates from Pune will join us at Kamshet or Lonavala
Will reach jambhavli the base village by night.
Will have our dinner in the Village, rest for an hour, and start for a night trek till the base of the cave.
Early morning wake up, breakfast, will start towards the patch.(this will prove us very helpful, as only one person can climb the patch at once. and no other goup reaches )
We will climb the patch and will be back by 12pm to the base of the cave.
From here we will return to Jambhavli.
Have lunch and will start our return journey to Mumbai(Karjat) / Pune(Kamshet).

Madangad is considered to be one of the most difficult forts to climb among all the forts in the Sahyadris. The area of the fort is quite small as compared to Alang and Kulang, its adjoining forts. There are only two water tanks on top of the fort. The area visible from the top of the fort is quite scenic. Camel Mountain Backpack

Update June 2010. I found this backpack suitable for 2 days trips . It is a bit huge for a one day trekking trip. Where i feel a sub 500 Rs knapsack will do.

The draw back for this backpack is that it does not have an outlet for the hydration pack (good for super long treks.)  .For this you can go for the eye back packs from sayonara - bandra

The other options if you do not have any budget restrictions is the wildcraft day packs - their store is at linking road.

More details about the fort Mahuli
Mahuli Fort, at 2815 ft., this is very popular spot frequented by Mumbaikars on weekends. Ease of access and the very much tranquil environs near the suburb of Asangaon is really luring more and more picnickers to Mahuli. Note that, this peak is also the highest ppoint in Thane district and offers an easy but steep climb.

There are three massifs seen in front as one reaches Mahuli village. The one on the right is Bhandargad, the centre one is Mahuli and the one on extreme right is Chotta Mahuli or Palasgad. Bhandargad is mostly an aggregation of group of pinnacles.

The top is a huge plateau with dilapidated fort walls, crumbling remnants of the bygone eras. The top hosts large water tank, and holds potable water, except during summer months. A small temple near the cave calms the ambience, with a potable water trough near it.

The creator of this fort is unknown. In 1485 this place came under rule Nijamshahi dynasty. When Shahaji Raje became the secretary of Nijamshahi, Mughals of Delhi tried to end Nijamshahi

n 1635-36, Shahaji Raje transferred himself with Jijabai and Shivaji to Mahuli. When Khan Jaman attacked the fort, Shahaji asked Portuguese for help, who refused and Shahaji surrendered.

Shivaji took this fort from Mughals on 8 Jan 1658. In 1661 it was given back and was won again by Shivaji. In treaty of Purandar, in 1665, Marathas lost these forts again. In Feb 1670, Shivaji Maharaj tried to conquer Mahuli, but failed, thanks to an alert Manohardas Gaud, who was the in charge of the fort

Thousand of Marathas were killed. Manohardas Gaud, soon gave up his position and Alveerdi Beg took over. On 16 June 1670, after two months, Moropant Pingle conquered the forts and Mahuli, Bhandargad and Palasgad became part of Swarajya. Till 1817, Shivaji's dynasty owned the fort and later by the Britishers.

Thanks and regards,

Some details about Harishchandragad and Konkan kada:
Harishchandragad is a hill fort in the Ahmednagar region of India. Its history is linked with that of Malshej Ghat, and it has played a major role in guarding the surrounding region. The height of the fort is 4671 ft MSL. The most interesting point on this fort is this cliff, which has always fascinated many people from many years. The cliff faces west and looks down upon the Konkan. From here, one can have a breathtaking view of the surrounding region and the setting sun. This cliff is not just vertical, but it is an overhang, almost like a cobra's hood.

The Konkan Kada, a unique formation in the Sahyadri, is really tough and a challenge for the trekkers. This is a semicircular cliff of about 2,000 ft straight drop + 1000 ft slant fall in the Konkan plains. The surrounding grandeur and beauty of the plains and the mountains leaves us totally spellbound.

Rappelling, also known as abseiling is an act of descending a mountain face by sliding down a rope, which is attached to a body harness and fastened to an overhead projection, with sufficient friction provided as to make the speed of the descend controllable.

Gopalgad Fort

The fort stands on a prominent and commanding point on the south shore of the creek entrance half a mile from Anjanvel.

It covers seven acres, and is surrounded on three sides by the sea, and on the fourth by a deep ditch now partly filled. There is no complete line of outworks, only one or two covered ways leading down to batteries.

The fort walls, built of stone and mortar, are very strong about twenty feet high "and eight thick, with, at some distance from each other, twelve bastions, until very lately armed with cannon.

Note :- I did not see any cannons at the fort. If anyone has please send me the photos of the cannons thanks .

South of the fort is a deep trench eighteen feet broad.

There are two doors, one to the east, the other to the west. On either side of the west door is a guardroom.

The interior of the fort, once full of buildings, still has traces of small houses.

Note :- did not see any traces of small houses . Please send me photos if you have seen these small houses

There are also three wells with a plentiful supply of water. Near the wells is a building said to have been the storeroom, close to it a granary, and at a little distance the governor's palace.

Note :- did not see any wells with water .Please send me photos if you have .

Some Persian verses on a flat oblong stone give the date 1707 and the builder's name Sidi Saad

Note :- I could not find this stone . If any one can find this stone at gopalgad and take some photos please mail it to me

History of Gopalgad

  • 16th Century Anjanvel fort, called Gopalgad, was built by the Bijapur kings in the sixteenth century,
  • 1660 strengthened by Shivaji
  • 1681-1689 improved by his son Sambhaji .
  • 1699 the fort was attacked and captured by Khairat Khan, Habshi of Janjira (1680-1708), who added the lower fort, padkot.
  • pad -kot means lower fort/area
  • 1744 (December), Tulaji Angria Sirkhel took it from the Habshi, and naming it Gopalgad, added the upper fort, balekot. Pronounced ba-le kot meaning upper wall
  • 1755, Passed to the Peshwaand on the Peshwa's overthrow.
  • 17th May 1818 Fell to Colonel Kennedy .
  • 1829 It was abandoned and the troops moved to Dapoli, the fort was garrisoned by a small force of two officers and 200 native soldiers.
  • 1862 It had no garrison and only eighty-eight old unserviceable guns.

Note :- I could not make out the differences or make out what was the lower-middle and upper walls if anyone knows please take photos of these areas and send it to me
