Transfer by jeep or by Bus to the nearby village, Spituk and start trekking down through the barren landscape after crossing Indus from Spituk Bridge. The trail turns east through a narrow valley after a stream. Cross the stream to reach a wooded place and then the village Zingchan. We will camp at the upper end of the village which offers a good camping site that you rent for a nominal fee.

Zingchan - Rumbak
Time 5 hours

Cross a wooden bridge beyond the village, across a mountain stream followed by three or four more river crossings; but the water is not more than knee deep during summer months. At the junction of two valleys, the route turns east into a narrow valley and you see the small village of Rumbak. Camp by the side of a stream.

Hemis National Park is a high altitude protected area created in1981 in the eastern part of the cold desert of Ladakh for the conservation and protection of its unique flora and fauna. It covers an area of 600 sq. km in the Markha and Rumbak valleys. There are many U-shaped valleys, carved by the glacial actions that occurred in the past. Rivers and streams have laid a thick deposit of sand along their banks. The general elevation of the parks exact location is over 10,000 ft.

Dry forests of juniper, birch and fir are found in the region. Also present are the alpine grasslands and scrublands. There are many rare and endangered animal species found in the cold desert area that are also found in the Hemis national park, known to be the home of an interesting assemblage of cold desert fauna. Amongst these are the elusive snow leopard, Tibetan wild ass or the Kyang, ibex, serow and Tibetan antelope.
