from the last 38 years Youth Hostels Association of India is organizing National Himalayan Trekking Expedition in various parts of Himalayas. For the Third time with diversification, we are organizing National Himalayan Mountain Biking Expidition (from Kullu to jalori pass and back in kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh).

HIMACHAL PRADESH has referred to as the land of gods and goddesses and snow clad mountains. Perennial streams flow here with crystal clear water. Its beautiful valleys present extensive forests and picturesque meadows dotted with a variety of flora amd fauna, which beckon the young adventure lovers to come and experience the serene and calm atmosphere of all pervading nature. Jalori Pass located at a height of 10500 ft provides an awesome and breathtaking view. It is famous for its beauty of colorful birds. You may come across simple Himachal people who are proud of their land, culture and heritage.

Purpose of the Programme

The purpose of the programme is to expose the YHAI members to a greater adventure and to rough out the rigors of plodding through snow with a sense of love for nature and outdoor recreational activity aiming at promoting national integration.


The minimum age for joining these expeditions is 18 years. This condition will be adhered to strictly.


Rs. 1,800/- per head, which will cover use of bicycle, stay in tented accommodation, simple nutritious vegetarian food, guidance, equipment, insurance and Forest entry fee. You will however, bear the to and fro travel expenses from your home town to the Base Camp and back.

How to Reach

For National Himalayan Mountain Biking, Our Base Camp is Aut which is on Kullu - Manali Hishway. It is 28 Kms short from Kullu. Direct bus services are also available from ISBT Delhi , Chandigarh and other parts of Punjab to Kullu. Nearest railheads are joginder Nagar, Pathankot and Chandigarh .

Schedule of Programme

You may choose to report at the base camp on any day from 24TH Apr, 28TH Apr, 2ND May, 6TH May, 10TH May, 14TH May, 18TH May, 22ND May, 26TH May and 30TH May, 2008.

The schedule will be as follows.

Day 1

Report at Base Camp (Youth Hostel, Aut ) -ht. 3,500 ft.

Day 2

Acclimatization and Orientation.

Day 3

Biking to Youth Hostel, Banjar 22 Kms 4000 ft.

Day 4

Biking to Youth Hostel, Jibhi 10 Kms 6000 ft.

Day 5

Biking to Youth Hostel, Jalori Pass 10 Kms 10500 ft.

Day 6

Nature Trial at Jalori Pass.

Day 7

Biking at youth Hostel Aut - 42 Kms 3500 ft.

Day 8

Group breaks after breakfast


Extensive and painstaking preparations have gone into the planning of trek routes for your safety. Our field staff and experienced camp leaders have been visiting the area to check all details. While every care has been taken to ensure safety, the Youth Hostels Association of India cannot be held responsible for any accident, illness and such other unforeseen eventualities.
Deviation from the set route of the programme is not permitted. If participants desire to join any other activity, they may do so at their own responsibility and risk only after finishing the trek and checking out.

Participants who successfully complete the trek and abide by the discipline of the programme, will be awarded certificates. Programme Schedule / Route Programme Schedule and Routes are subject to change without prior notice.


In case you are unable to join the trek after paying the participation fee, you will get Rs. 900/- as refund of participation fee provided your request is received directly in the National Office at least 7 days in advance from the date of your reporting. No refund will, however, be admissible if such notice falls short of 7 days

Adventure Scholarships for the Physically Challenged Youth

YHAI announces 50 Adventure Scholarships of Rs.900/- each to the physically challenged youth including deaf and dumb for these expeditions. Deserving youth may apply to the National Office, on a plain paper, duly supported by relevant certificates.

Special Casual Leave

The Trekking Expeditions organized by Youth Hostels Association of India have the approval of Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, (Dept. of Personnel and Training), Government of India, vide office order No. 28016/89- Estt(A), dated 25th October, 1989. Participants working for Central Government, can apply to the authorities concerned for availing special casual leave for the duration of the expedition. This leave can be sanctioned by their office up to 30 days in a calendar year.

Photographic Competition

After the completion of each trekking expedition, photographic competition is held for which attractive cash prizes and certificates are awarded. You may also send your entries on the following subjects:

Nature (Birds, Flowers, Wildlife, Scenic beauty),

The size of the prints should be 8"x10". Please give brief details of the location of the subjects and also your name, address and group number on the reverse of the photograph. YHAI has the right to retain/use even the entries which are not selected for awards with due acknowledgement/compensation. Last date for submitting entries is 31st July, 2008.

Your Attention

Please note that this is an environment friendly trek. Do not litter any wrappers or spoil the trail in any way. In case you find any wrapper, plastic bag or any thing left by trekkers on the way, please carry the same with you for deposit at the base camp. We will be selecting and appointing two environ-leaders per group. If you have an inclination and an eye for environment protection, we will be glad to receive your particulars along with your registration form.


Burning of wood during camp fire is strictly prohibited.
Smoking, use of alcohols and narcotics of any description are strictly prohibited during the course of the programme.
