Nisarga Bhraman trek to Lohgad-Visapur-Bhaje caves -21st June08

NB trek to Lohgad-Visapur-Bhaje caves -21st June08
Hey there Friends,

With the early advent of rains, we at Nisarga Bhraman have decided to trek to Twin forts of Lohagad-Visapur & Bhajje caves near Lonavala on the 21st June 08.
The sole intention of this trek is to get wet in the rains, enjoy the numerous waterfalls that dot the route, and of course savour the experience of walking amongst the mists & clouds.

Here is some Info about Lohagad-Visapur-Bhajje Caves:

Height: 3400/3567/2800 Feet above MSL(Approx)
Grade: Easy
District: Pune
Region: Lonavala
Base Village: Lohagadwadi

Lohagad: This is one of the most interesting forts to visit as it still has its fortification and doorways in pristine condition. The fort dates back to the Satvahan Era and was mainly used to keep a watch on the trade route passing through the Sahyadris.
As one starts ascending the fort, 4 massive doors have to be crossed namely Ganesh Darwaza, Narayan Darwaza, Hanuman Darwaza, & Maha Darwaza. The top of the fort is expansive and has a huge lake built by Nana Phadnis.
The most interesting feature of this fort is the ‘Vinchu Katta’, which stretches for almost 2 kms and is slightly detached from the fort. The end of this katta has a bastion which was used for keeping a watch on the region.
As the name itself suggest, the ‘Vinchu Katta’ when viewed from the top of the fort resembles a Scorpions Sting.

Visapur: The companion fort to Lohagad, Visapur also served as a lookout point for the trade route passing through Lonavala.
The fort of Visapur is much more expansive and has a still standing fortification on the top.
The door and steps leading to the top of the fort are worth a look.

Bhajje Caves: These beautiful Buddhist caves are carved out of the Visapur Mountain.
The stupas inside are still intact and the caves also hold a temple dedicated to the ‘Sun God’.
The caves are under the Archeological Survey of India(ASI) and are worth a deekho.
