NB Recon Trek to Peb Fort on 1st Nov 08

Hey there Friends,

We, at Nisarga Bhraman, have taken Fort Peb under our wings to try and change the deplorable conditions atop the fort.
The winds of change are sweeping across the fort, we at Nisarga Bhraman, have successfully managed to clean 3 water cisterns full of debris and mud and have managed to get them back into pristine condition.
Our efforts have started paying off, the water cisterns have already started storing water and would provide clean drinking water for any visitor to the fort.
The next in line in our continuous endeavour to bring the fort back to its Glorious Past would be to make the fort much greener!

As a part of our afforestation program, we planted around 100 odd Saplings atop the fort on 29th June 08.
Type: Hill Fort
Height: 2100 Feet above MSL (Approx)
Grade: Medium (3.0 hrs)
District: Raigad
Region: Karjat
Base Village: Neral

Peb: Located in the same mountain range as Matheran, Peb fort is a enjoyable trek for a days outing.

The fort derives it name from the Goddess ‘Pebi’; Peb is also called ‘Vikatgad’ for its supposed shape of the Elephant Headed God, ‘Ganesh’.

The trek to the top involves surmounting a small rock patch and a ladder.

The fort is famous for its caves which are maintained by disciples of Swammi Samartha and the meditation chambers carved out from the rock inside the mountain.

To get inside the meditation chamber, one has to crawl through a narrow passage in the rock and then climb down into the meditation chamber. The chamber is very well maintained with tiles on the floor for ppl to sit and meditate.

The fort also has a temple dedicated to Swammi Samartha on the top and has the footwear or ‘Padukas’ worn by the great saint kept on the top.

The view of the entire Neral and Karjat region from the top is worth the climb.

Another attraction of the trek is the only standing Basti

Planting the saplings will not just make the place greener, but would also aid in checking the massive soil erosion that is occurring on the mountain which was the reason for the tanks getting filled with mud.

The support that we have received from all our enthusiastic members to aid us in this noble job has been very heartening, and we look up to you once again to join us to check on the growth of the saplings.
